about

This is the result of about 5 years of refining and looking for my style and voice...after a career of 28 years as a pro "gun-for hire" guitarist. It takes time to know what to leave out, to learn what you can and can't do, and how to connect that with people you want to actually be with in a venue ...who might like it, what reaction you want. What you want to say lyrically. And can you live with it long-term? This is the best I could come up with, using the best instruments, great musicians who are also friends, good gear, great mixing, mastering and artwork. Thank you everyone who had input into this project...I'm excited!

Track Name: A Thousand People A Week
A Thousand People A Week

I saw it on the news heard it on the radio
So what are we gonna do and where are they all gonna go?
1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do?

They gonna eat all our food drink all our Queensland booze
I say build a fence, no, better a wall from Rathdowney to Cavill Avenue Mall
1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do?

They gonna drink all our water, there’s not enough for everyone
They gonna marry all our daughters even worse soak up all our Queensland sun
1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do?

They come from strange places They got strange religions oh
Some even believe in God got a fish sticker on the Winnebago
1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do?

People in cars People off planes People on the bus People on the train
People on foot and in boats and canoes
People on every kinda transport they choose
1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do?
1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do?

It used to be a big country town
Now it’s getting bigger and how
140 people a day
is 6 people every hour
1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do?

I love this city
I love this city
It’s relaxed and pretty
Not dirty and gritty
1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do?
1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do?

It’s gonna be like California
California in the 30’s
Don’t tell me I didn’t warn you
It’s gonna get down and dirty
1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do?

1000 people a week,1000 people a week, 1000 people a week,1000 people a week
1000 people a week are comin’ to Brisbane, What’re we gonna do?

Track Name: Second Coalition Budget Blues
The Second Coalition Budget Blues

Times are hard, they’re rough Some people are getting too much
I’m not getting enough
I’ve got the no cash no stash hard up Second Coalition Budget blues.

There’s a wolf at my door I keep on feeding the beast It keeps on wanting more
I’ve the canine, sit down, roll over Second Coalition Budget blues.

I’ve got the budget balancing blues I’m cutting back to basics: cigarettes and booze
I’ve got the hung over, draw back, spun out Second Coalition Budget blues.

Now if you and I were born in Dubai we might get a big fat oil royalty
Cos over there the queen and king would do the right thing
They’d share it all with you and me
But here in the land of milk and honey we’re so uptight about money
The government and the companies steal
Steal from the blacks steal from the whites
Steal from every blinky blanky colour they see
So dig me a hole in the sand
Where I can put my head so I don’t hafta understand
About the corporate protestant psychopathic Second Coalition Budget

In the morning when I hand in my form the man And he stamps it with a big fat grin
He knows that I’ve spent it before I even get it
He sez “I don’t why ya even bother handing it in”

When you could laze on sunny days On a QLD beach, with a mango in reach
With the slip on, slop on, slap on Second Coalition Budget blues.

Eating your lunch right off the trees Where ya don’t need a shirt
Not a chance that you’ll freeze In the skin tight, hot nights, alright,
Second Coalition Budget blues.

Yes you could dig a hole and put in a seed
And in time you could have everything that ya need
In the home grown, no dig, fresh picked Second Coalition Budget blues.

So get the the home made, fresh laid, unpaid
Second Coalition Budget blues.

Track Name: Brisbane Rain
BRISBANE RAIN

ITS RAINING HERE IN BRISBANE AND THE SUN KEEPS POURING DOWN
THIS TOWN IS MORE LIKE SINGAPORE I THINK WE’RE GONNA DROWN
SUMMER MONSOON WAY TOO LONG GOT THE GLOBAL WARMING BLUES
AND EVERY NIGHT THE WEATHER LADY GIVES US MORE BAD NEWS

WELL I DROVE UP HERE FROM MELBOURNE LOOKING FOR A LITTLE HEAT
SICK AND TIRED OF COLD AND WET I WANNA WEAR BARE FEET
NOW I’M SWEATIN ALL THE TIME THINKING OF FITZROY
MY WASHINGS ROTTING ON THE LINE SUN ALL DAY AND RAIN ALL NIGHT

CHORUS:
BRISBANE RAIN KEEPS COMING DOWN ITS A SOUTH EAST ASIAN BIG COUNTRY TOWN
BRISBANE RAIN KEEPS COMING DOWN
HOT AND WET WET AND HOT GOTTA GET BACK DOWN SOUTH AGAIN

WELL I’M STUCK UP HERE IN BRISBANE AND I DUNNO WHAT TO DO
COULD GET ON A PLANE TO SPAIN ESCAPE THIS STEAMIN BREW
THIS HEAT IS TOO VOLUPTUOUS I COULD BE IN VIETNAM
THAT MUDDY BRISBANE RIVER LOOKS JUST LIKE THE MEKONG IN THIS RAIN

BOBBY MACFERRIN AND PHERELL WILLIAMS HAVE GOT A LOT TO ANSWER FOR
THEY LEFT ME TRYING TO CLAP ALONG HAPPY IN A ROOM WITHOUT A FLOOR
I WAS TRYING TO WORRY DIDN’T WANNA BE HAPPY HAD A PROBLEM UNDER CONSIDERATION
BUT I STILL WANT THE NUMBER OF THE GUY THAT SUPPLIES BOBBY AND PHERELL’S MEDICATION

HAPPY WITH THE BLUES DON’T BOTHER CLAPPING ALONG COS THERE IS NO INFECTIOUS SPIRIT IN THIS SONG
HAPPY WITH THE BLUES ROOF IS COMING DOWN ON ME TODAY BUT I FEEL BETTER THAN I FELT YESTERDAY

I USED TO WATCH THE NEWS WHEN I WAS FEELING HAPPY BUT IT MADE ME A CYNICAL MAN
SO NOW WHEN THINGS ARE DEPRESSING I FIND IT SO REFRESHING
TO SEE PEOPLE MUCH WORSE OFF THAN I AM
ITS AN ARROGANT PERVERSION A PATHETIC ANAESTHETIC TO COMPARE ANY LIFE I WOULD PREFER
BUT IT’S HARD TO HAVE IDEALS WHEN YOU’RE EATING TV MEALS
WATCHING REFUGEES DROWNING ON THE SOFA

HAD A SESSION WITH A DOCTOR WHO GAVE ME ANTIDEPRESSANTS BUT I CHUCKED ALL THE PILLS IN THE BIN
IT MADE ME FEEL SO GOOD I GOT A SECOND PRESCRIPTION AND CHUCKED ‘EM ALL AWAY AGAIN
HEARD ABOUT A THERAPY DECIDED TO TRY IT YOGA AT A VEGETARIAN GYM
BUT NOTHIN’ REALLY HAPPENED TILL THE FEMALE GYM INSTRUCTOR
MADE MY PHEREMONES FINALLY KICK IN
HAPPY WITH THE BLUES DON’T BOTHER CLAPPING ALONG COS THERE IS NO INFECTIOUS SPIRIT IN THIS SONG
HAPPY WITH THE BLUES HERE’S A LITTLE BLUES THAT I WROTE
YOU MIGHT LIKE TO SING IT NOTE FOR NOTE

SHE PUT THE WRONG CREAM IN MY COFFEE SHE USED THE WRONG MILK IN MY TEA
I REMEMBER ASKING FOR LACTOSE-FREE OH THIS IS GONNA BE THE DEATH OF ME
FIRST WORLD IT’S A FIRST WORLD PROBLEM
BOO HOO GIMME GIMME SHIMMY TO THE FIRST WORLD BLUES

ME AND MY GIRL GOT MARRIED WE DECIDED ON AN ELVIS THEME
BUT AT THE COSTUME SHOP I NEARLY BLEW MY TOP
THE WIG WAS TOO SMALL AND THE PANTS WEREN’T CLEAN

THEY GOT THE LIMO WRONG AT THE WEDDING I ASKED FOR A CADILLAC
BUT THEY SEND A STUDEBAKER I WAS AFRAID THAT WE’D BREAK HER
COS MY LADY AND MYSELF COULDN’T FIT ACROSS THE BACK

I’VE GIVEN UP MY FAVOURITE RESTAURANT COS THEY RUINED MY FAVOURITE DISH
I DROVE TO EVERY MACCAS IN THE CITY LAST NIGHT TRYIN TO FIND AN ORIGINAL FILET-O-FISH

WELL I KNOW I SHOULDN’T CARE IF MY STEAK ISN’T RARE WHEN THERE ARE PEOPLE STARVING, EVERYWHERE
BUT EVERYTHING’S RELATIVE IT’S MY WIFE’S IMPERATIVE
TO COMPLAIN THAT SHE CAN’T DO A THING WITH HER HAIR

I WANT EVERYTHING ENTITLED TO ME TAX FREE MONEY, HOSPITALS, PROTECTION BY THE POLICE
AND IN REGARD TO THE STEAK I WANT IT RARE OR I SWEAR I’LL MAKE A SCENE CHORUS

I WENT ON HOLIDAY WITH MY DAUGHTER,
SAW PEOPLE WALKING MILES TO GET A DRINK OF WATER,
PEOPLE DYING OF DISEASE THAT WE CAN CURE WITH EASE,
WITH JUST A LITTLE MONEY NOW THAT ISN’T FUNNY,
THE STREET WAS A LIVING HELL OUTSIDE OUR FINE HOTEL,
THEY’RE SLEEPING FIVE TO A BED AND AT FIFTY YOU’RE DEAD,
WORK IN A SWEATSHOP ALL DAY FOR A CUPLA DOLLARS PAY,
MAKIN’ DESIGNER JEANS AND LIVIN’ ON RICE AND BEANS,
UNTIL THE DAY ROLLS ROUND WHEN THEY’VE HAD ENOUGH,
AND THEY PICK UP A GUN AND SAY “I DON’T GIVE A STUFF”,
AND WE SEE WHAT’S GOING ON AND WE START TO CURSE,
SO WE START ANOTHER WAR AND SIMPLY MAKE IT WORSE
CHORUS

Motorbikes come from all directions cars and buses and bicycles too
When you cross the street trust in your feet cos thinking could well be the end of you
Just walk straight out into the traffic don’t hesitate dodge or be scared
Don’t let courage fail ya It’s not like Australia No-one’s self-righteous and there’s no road rage

Everyone eyes front and step to the side, don’t try to fight it just flow with the tide
Of machines and humans in a river of life, you’re doing the Hanoi Street Waltz

When I was a boy in Australia I learnt “look right, look left, look right again… walk
cross if its safe use your eyes and your ears”, try that in Hanoi you’ll be waiting for years
Farewell to that sidewalk forever, farewell to any fear of the road
My crossing was safe, regulated by State, the green man the Glorious Leader I know
But Vietnamese anarchy reigns on these roads, there is no translation to their highway code
It’s sweet and it’s happy, individual as hell Proof that the communist system is well

Everyone eyes front and step to the side, don’t try to fight it just flow with the tide
Of machines and humans in a river of life, you’re doing the Hanoi Street Waltz

I used to be a brain dead pedestrian but a week in Hanoi woke me up from that dream
Now crossing the street is a challenge for feet and a rush to my brain of sweet adrenaline
That honking cacophony is music to me a soundtrack to a vehicular ballet
Motorbikes people and cars all plie while they’re doing the Hanoi Street Waltz

Everyone eyes front and step to the side, don’t try to fight it just flow with the tide
Of machines and humans in a river of life, you’re doing the Hanoi Street Waltz
you’re doing the Hanoi Street Waltz you’re doing the Hanoi Street Waltz
Track Name: Baby's Got The Blues
Baby’s Got The Blues © Roo Friend APRA 2017

I was born the other day, came into this noisy world
Daddy said it’s a boy, when I sure as hell ain’t no little girl
Then they took me from my mama
Wrapped me so tight I couldn’t move
No wonder I get so angry I’m a baby with the blues
I’m a baby with the blues
Baby baby baby
I’m a baby with the blues

This little piggy went to market…leave my toes alone!
If I hear that rhyme just one more time, I’m gonna crawl away from home
Leave me in a dirty nappy! And how about a pair of shoes?
No wonder I get so angry I’m a baby with the blues

Chorus

Daddy said we had to go to the doctor to get a prescription filled
Got stuck with a dirty great needle it’s lucky I wasn’t killed
But I got my own back later on
Kept ‘em both up half the night
They were so ratty in the morning
They had a terrible fight but I don’t care…
I’m a baby with the blues

Chorus

Now every baby’s different
No one is like another
When I was born I was so ugly
The doctor slapped my mother!
So here’s a little question I’m a askin you
If you ever were a baby
Did you ever get the blues?
Track Name: The Community Garden Greens
The Community Garden Greens © Roo Friend APRA 2017

Most people sing the blues
But I’m telling you I got the greens
Most people sing the blues
But I’m telling you I got the greens
Cos blues is about a bad time
But my green is a beautiful dream

My baby didn’t leave me
She didn’t even catch a train
My baby didn’t leave me
She didn’t go to Buranda Station and catch a train
My baby’s in the garden today
Picking potatoes and beans again

I got the greens so bad
Do you know what I mean, feeling green?
I got the greens so bad
Do you know what I mean, feeling green?
I planted a seed the other day
And now its beautiful head can be seen

Oh blue is a seductive feeling
But green is a positive cure for blue
Oh yeah blue is a seductive feeling
But green is a poitive cure for blue

Well let me tell you people
I got the community garden greens
Well let me tell you people
I got the community garden greens
I cooked em up in a stir fry
And they were the nicest I’ve ever eaten
Track Name: 300 matres Of Perennial Rye
300 Metres Of Perennial Rye © Roo Friend APRA 2017

300 meters of perennial rye Six kilos of seed is all that I need
Don’t know if it’ll feed me but I gotta try 300 meters of perennial rye

I’ve done some hard things might do them again Made a lotta mistakes felt lotsa pain
Trouble with women money and friends This job reminds me of that all again

I had a family a woman and kids And I am ashamed of the things that I did
After the settlement I purchased this land Put up a cabin now that’s where I am

I asked the salesman “will a get a crop out of this grain?”
He said “five years of head, yes, if you get five years of rain”
Five years of pleasure or five years of pain Don’t know if I want to Go through that again

Now I’m walking in mud walking in rain It’s the right time to seed this particular plain
Ain’t got a harrow, just a rake in my hand, one day I might get a feed off this land

My body is aching, and my head is numb this is the hardest work I have done
When I get through this gonna lay down and die 300 metres of perennial rye

I’m praying for sunshine I’m praying for rain Don’t know what I want but I’m praying again
Stuck up in this cabin slowly going mad this could be the last chance I ever have

300 meters of perennial rye six kilos of seed is all that I need
Don’t know if it’ll feed me but I gotta try 300 meters of perennial rye
